QCoal’s Byerwen coal mine, near Glenden has the go ahead from the State Government. The mining leases for the billion dollar venture with Japan’s JFE Steel have been approved. The projects set to create 350 construction jobs at peak followed by 545 ongoing jobs once the coking and thermal mine is fully operational. JFE Steel announcing construction will start to start. The proposed Byerwen mine is expected to yield up to 10 million tonnes of coking and thermal coal annually.

An SES volunteer has been winched to safety after he fell while on a search at Mount Britton. The 29 year old injured his leg while searching for a man believed missing for a week in the area. He was airlifted to the Mackay Base Hospital yesterday afternoon.

The call is out to witnesses following a driver slamming into geese at the Gooseponds. It happened on Friday morning leaving one dead and just missing others. One anonymous witness says it was a white vehicle while the RSPCA say the driver could be prosecuted if witnesses come forward.

Mackay police are investigating a number of reports of property offences all occurring over the weekend. They say a crim broke into a home in West Mackay on Saturday night and stole a wallet and iPad while the victim was in the shower.

The 2017 RACQ CQ Rescue Model Search is looking for Mackay's next top model. The search last year raising over $31,000 for the service. Naomi Noy from the Rescue service says there's one model from last year who comes to mind.

Widening and strengthening works will between Wollingford Road and Melba House on the Mackay-Eungella Road will start today. Motorists can expect lane closures, speed restrictions and delays.

LOCAL SPORT

16-year-old futsal super star -- Dylan Mayne from Mackay is off to Brazil today to represent the nation. He's in the Australian Futsal team who are on an international tour.

In local rugby league - the Wests Tigers pounced on the Whitsunday Brahmans at the weekend to win by 12 points. The tigers ramping up the action in the final 20 minutes of the game.
