Member for Dawson, George Christensen has quit as the LNP's "chief whip" so he can spend more time being "ill-disciplined". He revealed his decision was made after he and Barnaby Joyce came to a mutual agreement. Mr Christensen said the decision was his alone and no one pushed him. "However, I did feel some of my colleagues may have been aggrieved that the enforcer of discipline was being somewhat ill-disciplined himself. "My continued outspokenness on a variety of issues was obviously incompatible with the position of party whip in the long term." He said in a statement on Tuesday.

 Matthew James Ireland has had his murder charge downgraded to manslaughter in the Mackay Supreme Court. The 31 year old’s accused of killing an 18-month-old Moranbah boy Hemi Burke in 2015. The Townsville man's yet to enter a plea.

A truck rollover has caused almost 150 homes in Marian to go without power. It happened on Tuesday afternoon on Marian-Eton Road – bringing down power lines While power was restored last night.

Hot Wok Noodle Bar on Victoria Street in Mackay is being forced to close temporarily. It's following Monday's fire that left the ceiling extensively damaged. The owner Kim Wu tells the Mercury she has no idea when the shop might re-open.

Crime Stoppers Queensland has recorded its highest ever number of annual arrests with 80 made in Mackay last year. The anonymous tip offs have led to over 210 charges being made in the region. Crime Stoppers Queensland CEO Trevor O’Hara says it's a huge achievement.

LOCAL SPORT

Round one of the Intrust Super Cup kicks off this weekend and the Mackay Cutters have named their starting team. Yamba Bowie will be hitting the field as a fullback. While the boys are excited about the return of the Foley Shield. The QRL Northern Division and the three Intrust Super Cup clubs based in North Queensland will be participating.

An under 18 Mackay Crows inaugural team will be taking on Rockhampton in April. Just about every football club across the region is represented. Jeff Neumann from AFL Mackay says he's happy with the lineup.
