MACKAY’S MODERN TAKE ON BROADWAY SPECTACLE

IT’S a well-known production that’s been on stage for forty years, with sold-out productions in the West End, Broadway and here in Australia. Now, Mackay locals are making their mark on the internationally acclaimed smash theatre production, Jesus Christ Superstar, on stage at the MECC September 8 and 9.

Following on from their successful production of Wicked! earlier in 2017, Mackay Musical Comedy Players (MMCP) will bring the internationally acclaimed smash to life for three shows only.

The story of Jesus Christ Superstar brings a fresh, contemporary look at the Gospel account of the last week of Jesus’ life.
Christ’s final days are dramatized with emotional intensity, thought-provoking edge and explosive creativity.
One of Christ’s followers, Judas, increasingly questions the enlightened motives of this new prophet, resulting in his eventual betrayal.

Set against the evils of a modern-day corporate world and propelled by a stirring rock score, Jesus Christ Superstar shows the power of the human spirit with a passion that goes straight to the heart.
MMCP Publicity Officer, Stancia Guthrie, encouraged Mackay audiences to come along and be ‘wowed’ by this fresh, contemporary production.

She said the work and lead-up to the performances has been intense, there are big songs to reproduce and the show moves at an energetic pace from start to finish. It will look spectacular on stage.”
The three leading performers in Jesus Christ Superstar are no strangers to the Mackay stage. Dean Salty, who plays Jesus, has played diverse leading roles in many MMCP productions such as Fame, Les Miserables, Grease, Hairspray and Bonnie and Clyde.

Ben Cooper, who takes on the challenging role of Judas, has been singing from the age of 9, playing in professional productions of Oliver and Oklahoma on the Gold Coast. He has also played number of featured and lead roles in Avenue Q, Titanic the Musical, Legally Blonde and Sweeney Todd. Ben in this production.

Rounding out the trio, Molly Rossetto, who plays Mary Magdalene, is the writer/performer of the cabaret show Man Songs and has played Roxie Hart in Chicago, Lucy Barker in Sweeney Todd and was featured in MMCP’s production of Wicked! earlier this year.

MMCP are Mackay’s specialist musical theatre company and have been entertaining Mackay audiences for over 50 years with their quality productions, theatre restaurants and revues.

Jesus Christ Superstar is presented by MMCP in association with ORiGiN Theatrical on behalf of The Really Useful Group.
