School's out for Queenslanders, and as families hit the road for the holidays, Mackay police have been out in force for the first day of their Christmas road blitz. Keziah Sullivan from 9 News Mackay

A three vehicle crash on the Bruce Highway at Koumala last night forced the closure of the road for hours as Police and Paramedics worked to transported patients and clear the wreckage. A 20 year old woman was taken to Mackay base Hospital

A new blood donor centre will open this week in Mackay’s Sydney street. It's the third location change the service has had but this new central spot is hoping to attract more blood and plasma donors. There's currently 700 appointments needing to be filled this festive season.

Mackay organization Reef Catchments is calling on two residents to come forward and collect an owl nesting box each. They’re hoping that locals may want to help boost population numbers of our endangered birds- like the masked owl. Project Officer, Cas Hayward says our history gives some insight into the issue.

 

The first ever direct flight from Beijing will touch down in Brisbane Today. 170,000 Chinese travellers expected to take advantage of the new flights will also travel within Queensland, including the Whitsundays.

Dogs Queensland wants us to think about our furry family members this Christmas. Leftovers and presents, high on the not suitable list for our babies. Director Craig Pettet says there might be a few nights you need to keep your pets inside also.

LOCAL SPORT

Mackay's best professional darts players have competed in a two day knock out final series decider at the weekend. The Taylors Bulls made it to the grand finals led by captain Theo Greyling.

 In Cricket it was a win for Brothers at the weekend when they competed in round eight of the DBCT Poole Cup against Pioneer Valley.
