A manhunt is underway for a heartless thief, who smashed open a safe at the Northern Beaches Salvation Army Store. Reece D'alessandro of 9 News Mackay has more. 

 

Our Hospitals are under more stress than ever with methamphetamine-related cases jumping 23 times since 2010. According to Queensland Health statistics admissions rose from 2 to 124 in Mackay. That's in compared to a 99 case increase in Central Queensland and 388 on the Gold Coast. 

Dawson MP George Christensen will be officially opening the Mackay Aqua Park and Andergrove Lakes today. The project solely funded under the federal Government's Community Development Grants program.

Ships waiting to export coal are backed up along the Mackay Coast, waiting to be filled. 

Mackay Senior Constable Steven Smith is warning residents of the real risk their card could be skimmed this Christmas. They've had reports of 20 scams in just minutes, four of them for skimming. There's some ways to prevent this happening though like closely inspecting  ATM's prior to use and limiting the funds on the bank card which you use while you are out and about. Constable Smith says while you’re shopping up a storm, scammers are out in force.

And with just 10 sleeps until Christmas! Keziah Sullivan from 9 News has gone on the hunt to uncover the best light displays around the region.

 

 LOCAL SPORT

Three promising Whitsunday athletes have been awarded the first grants under Council’s new Financial Support for Elite Athletes policy. Running star Elliarna Mitch, Rising powerlifter Brodie Toms and track and field young gun Kieran Klaus all chosen to receive funds. Whitsunday Mayor Andrew Willcox says Council is happy to be helping raise the profile of the region and our sporting stars.

In Cricket, The Mackay Whitsunday under 16's squad has celebrated a convincing win over Far North Queensland in the Bulls Masters Youth Cup. The last play in the three day competition was perfect... limiting their opposition to 124 off 37 overs on Jack Lancaster oval.
