Emergency services have rushed to a building fire this morning on Shute Harbour Road at Airlie Beach. The call coming in for help around 2AM

A man in his late 60’s has been killed in Sandiford near Mackay late yesterday afternoon. A Police spokesperson confirmed the man had been reversing a forklift down a ramp when it collapsed throwing the man under the cage. He suffered from significant head injuries and died a short time later. Workplace Health and Safety and the Forensic Crash Unit are now investigating.

Whitsunday MP Jason Costigan has announced that an LNP government will invest $2 million dollars to build a new visitor information centre on the Bruce Highway at Proserpine. The old centre was closed at the end of July after it became too costly to run. Mr Costigan says the LNP felt compelled to step in and re-do the vital establishment.

It's that time of the year, thousands of school leavers will be heading to EAST to celebrate the end of their high school careers. Thousands of students are expected to travel to Airlie Beach... with a strong message from those flying in to help control the crowds. Nth Qld director of RED FROGS, MATT PAPPAS says they've got two messages for school goers.

 

LOCAL SPORT

 

The Mackay Hockey club got a major boost yesterday with state MP for Mackay Julianne Gilbert announcing $200 thousand dollars would go towards replacing the club's synthetic surface. Ms Gilbert says with the likes of Hockeyroo Kristin Dwyer- the sport has been an integral part of Mackay's outdoor culture.

 

In Basketball- The Mackay Meteors have got their sights set on securing Queensland Basketball League MVP Sean Bruce back for the 2018 season.
