A North Mackay kindergaten has been broken into twice in consecutive nights, the thief getting away with I-pads and other expensive equipment. Nick Kelly from 9 News Mackay reports. 

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has done a stunning backflip and ordered a one year royal commission into the banking sector. After opposing an inquiry- he says the investigation is necessary to end business and economic uncertainty. It's something Dawson MP George Christensen went against his own party to fight for- launching a local online petition.

 

Police have charged a 17-year-old man and are questioning another after recovering thousands of dollars’ worth of stolen property in West Mackay. The property has been identified as belonging to homes in four separate break and enters. Among the goods, a motorbike and power tools. DECECTIVE SENIOR SEARGANT DAVID TUCKER says the property has been traced back to its rightful owners. 

An estimated 400 thousand tonnes of sugar cane has not been harvested in the Mackay region so far and it's looking likely that a halt will be called to crushing before farmers can cut their cane. The wet weather is being blamed. It's a disappointing end to the season with the same result recorded last year.

A Sydney couple have signed a $16 million dollar contract to buy Whitsunday's mega mansion- Mandalay House. It's one of the biggest purchases in the region to date- sitting on the market for two years.

LOCAL SPORT

 

Mackay's Brittany Breayley and Renae Kunst will find out today if they're playing against New Zealand at the weekend in the Women's Rugby World Cup. If it anything like the Cooks Islands battle it will be tough. Co-coach Rebecca Jones says the Jillaroos are the comfortable favourites though.

Seas Below 1 metre, increasing to 1 to 1.5 metres offshore by early evening. Swell East to northeasterly below 1 metre.
