The community is mourning the death of a young Mirani man. The former Mirani High School student Dallas Pau, was tragically killed at the weekend. Dallas was one of three young men thrown from a ute when it rolled at Eungella Dam. The two occupants of the ute who were with Dallas were taken to hospital with injuries and released on Sunday.  Dallas' parents Shaun and Billie spoke of the loss on Social Media. "It's with sadness that we wish to inform all our loved ones that our son Dallas Pau was taken away from us too soon. We love you son, fly high." Friends of Dallas have created formed a GoFundMe page for the family.

As the election numbers roll in, some have claimed victory, with others still in limbo. 9 News Mackay has the latest. 

Police were called to Northview State School yesterday afternoon after a man assaulted a woman while trying to take his children. Community members intervened and blocked the man's vehicle in.

The Peak Downs Highway at Eton Range was closed in both directions for hours yesterday due to a fire hazard. Fire crews were called to the top of the range at 12.30 after a ute erupted- resulting in a grass fire and major oil spill.

Schoolies is done and dusted for 20-17. This year’s group were well behaved and responsible in Airlie Beach according to our Police. Nathan Blain from the Police says he’s hailing it a success.

 

Work on Daydream Island Resort and Spa officially began yesterday afternoon- 8 months after Cyclone Debbie destroyed it and Hayman Island. Whitsunday Mayor Andrew Wilcox were there to celebrate the new revitalisation project. They hope to have the tourist hot spot open in AUGUST next year.

It opened just days open but Mackay Jubilee community centre is already powering ahead with a steady stream of bookings. The centre is in the renovated former City Library building and contains four public meeting rooms and an area for art and museum displays. The rooms have been named after Carmel Daveson. Mayor Greg Williamson says the facilities are cheap and cheerful.

LOCAL SPORT

 

TENNIS nets and court poles in Mackay are set to be replaced out of a Federal Government Stronger Communities Program grant of close to $15 thousand dollars. The club will also use some of the funding to upgrade the clubhouse kitchen. MP George Christensen says it adds up to a total project cost of over $29 thousand dollars.

Whitsunday Sailing Club have four brand new RS Quest dinghies to train in. The club has just received it's English- designed boats. Sailing officer Ross Chisholm says so far they've had great interest into the new additions and hope to grow the sport.
