Mackay Regional Council are looking at defensive driving programs for the region. Ayril Paton from council said there could be a demand for a driver education facility. "They typically focus on providing post-licence defensive driving training programs and courses in a controlled environment,” he said. The tender for the study was released November 22 and closes December 12.

Whitsunday Water police Sergeant Graeme Pettigrew is putting a number of the region's officers through their paces this week in boating training. They'll learn maritime laws and navigation skills. It's an important tool for a policing district surrounded by water. Nick Kelly from 9 News Mackay explains.

Mackay Police and Paramedics were called to Glenella Connection Road at 7.30 last night after two cars has collided. They worked to have the Edmund Case Bridge cleared by 9pm.

Bob Katter has once again called for the culling of crocs in the North from Mackay to Port Douglas after a tourist was attacked by an animal at the water’s edge in Cape Tribulation. The footage was captured on an iphone by the girl's friend- she was left with punctured wounds on her left thigh.

 LOCAL SPORT

There's a new kid on the block for the Mackay Magpies Crusaders United- with their first international signing arriving in the region. 19 year old New Zealand born Joey Omotani will join the squad ahead of the 20 18 NPL competition.

Mackay's best junior basketball teams were no match for Townsville and Rockhampton at the weekend- suffering a majority of losses. Only the under 18 girls managed to beat Townsville in one game on Saturday 83 to 53- coming back strong after a defeat the night before
