The RACQ CQ Rescue helicopter transported a 21 year old French tourist to Mackay base hospital yesterday morning after she fell into a fire pit three times. Rescue crews arrived at the Mushroom Valley scene near Yalbaroo about 2.30 AM. It's believed she was attending a  three-day music festival but had wandered away into bushland to another campsite nearby when the incident took place.

Mother Lydia Kirk is calling on the health department to create a birthing unit at the Bowen hospital after she had to give birth on the highway  trying to make it to Proserpine. Just 30 kilometres short of the Whitsundays Ms Kirk gave birth to a baby girl over the weekend- her partner cutting the cord. They are healthy and recovering in hospital.

Today is national headspace day and Mackay locals are being asked to assess their own mental wellbeing. Headspace CEO Jason Trethowan says you can reach out 24/ 7

 

The 71st Eisteddfod in Mackay is well underway- showcasing local talent in dance, instrumental and voice. Publicity officer Maria Atkins says there's been an outstanding number of competitors and spectators.

LOCAL SPORT

 

Mackay's Renae Kunst has been chosen to represent Australia at next month's Women's Rugby League World Cup. She'll play alongside our other local talent Brittany Breayley.

 

Local jockeys paid tribute to Fred Savage at the North Queensland Derby by wearing black arm bands. Friskier trotted away with $16 thousand dollars in prize money after a mammoth win.
