Local News for Mackay & the Whitsundays, 23rd February 2018. 

Aurizon coal executive to address the Resource Industry Network in Mackay. The Industry briefing on March 2nd will be hosted at Ocean International. They will outline Aurizon's activities in the region and discuss future developments

Pioneer State High School may be seen as the underdogs but they're showing Mackay what's what. The Andergrove based school may be considered the most socio-economically disadvantaged in the region. However just over 20 per cent of their OP eligible students achieved an OP score between 1 and 5 last year

 

The Whitsundays are shining tonight at the QANTAS Australian Tourism Awards. The event in Perth will host five local tourism operators who are in the running for national recognition. Ocean Rafting, The Abell Point Marina, BIG4 Adventure Whitsunday Resort, Cumberland Charter Yachts, and Island Jet Boating have all been nominated

Dolly’s Dream is one step further thanks to her Great Aunt organising a fundraising night in Mackay. Carol Booth asking locals to come to the Koumala Hotel tomorrow night to raise funds for bullying victims. She says they don't want to see any other family go through this.

 

This weekend Mackay RSPCA welcomes all animal lovers. All pets will be up for adoption at just $29 each! People interested in current rescues are encouraged to pre-register in order to fast track the adoption proces

It's a race against time for emergency crews in Moranbah, as they continue the massive clean up operation from Tuesday's ferocious storm, with more wild weather on the way.

 

The Environment Department says a crocodile, found in Goorganga Creek this week, drowned after getting tangled in fishing rope.

 

LOCAL SPORT

Finally some points on the  board for the Magpies Crusaders. There game against the Sunshine Coast on Saturday proving to be one of their best yet. Liam Shipton says they're happy to get their first points of the season.

Local business Smith and Sons Mackay North know how important sports are for kids. That's why they're offering two $150 bursaries to local kids and a $700 one for a local junior sports team. To nominate send them a Facebook message with the names, ages, sport, and some info on why they deserve it. Nominations close March 5th
