Tropical cyclone warnings remain current as Iris continues to track off the East Coast. A Warning zone in place from Bowen to Yeppoon including Mackay and The Whitsundays. The cell is currently sitting 300 kilometers north of Mackay tracking slowly south east. Residents are told to expect gale force winds and heavy rainfall leading to potential flash flooding. While it is expected to weaken and move offshore tomorrow Mayor Greg Williamson says residents should remain vigilant

 

The North Queensland Bulk Ports closes access to public assets in preparation for Tropical Cyclone Iris. Mackay's Southern Breakwater and Bowen Jetty closed for public safety with cyclone readiness plans put into action. The ports of Hay Point and Abbott Point closed off yesterday by the Regional Harbor Master

The Let's Shape Up program is pairing up with local business Vegies unlimited to tackle the obesity and diabetes problem. The partnership will deliver fresh fruit and vegetable to schools in the Mackay region to encourage healthy eating.  Let's Shape up Project Manager Robert Simpson says change must come from the top of communities.

WEATHER

MACKAY & WHITSUNDAYS:  Cloudy. Very high chance of rain areas and showers. The chance of a thunderstorm near the coast in the early morning. Heavy falls possible near the coast. Winds SE 40 to 60 km/h. Damaging wind gusts exceeding 90 km/h possible depending on movement and development of Tropical Cyclone Iris. Overnight temperatures falling to between 19 and 22 with daytime temperatures reaching the low to high 20s.

FLOOD WATCH: River level rises and areas of flooding may develop over parts of the Flood Watch area from Wednesday.Tropical Cyclone Iris in the Coral Sea is expected to bring heavy rain to coastal catchments in the Flood Watch area.Heavy rainfall may lead to local flooding. There is potential for the cyclone to reverse direction and take a northwest track on Thursday or Friday. There is a lot of uncertainty associated with the track of Tropical Cyclone Iris.
