Man faces court over hostage charges. The man fronted Mackay Magistrates Court yesterday for allegedly holding a woman hostage. He is said to have forced her to drive him away from the scene of a crash. Obtaining legal representation since his last appearance he entered no plea. He will remain in custody until he reappears later this month

Calls to end Oaky North Mine lockout. Federal Member for Dawson George Chrisrtensen repeating his message during a speech in Parliament yesterday. He acknowledged that though there has been some bad behaviour from unionists at the Glencore mine but he stressed enough was enough. He agrees that casualisation of the workforce is a key issue in the dispute and says it must be addressed

Buyers are circling at the Mackay Sugar Mill. Its' at risk of going under due to an enormous $169 million debt. The sale looks inevitable with a number of buyers expressing interest in a majority share. A sale does however require a 75% vote from growers

Mackay building companies are being encouraged to Tender for upcoming projects. It's all thanks to the State Governments Buy Queensland Initiative. Member for Mackay Julieanne Gilbert says businesses can get some help with their applications.

Students were taken on a journey through the Mackay Base Hospital today, and given a first hand look at the dangers associated with alcohol.

 

 

 

Struggling retailers are turning to the public for suggestions on drawing customers to the region's shopping strips.

 

 

A sale might be the only way forward for Mackay Sugar, as the company struggles to pay down debt. There has been some shed meetings in Mackay. 

 

 

LOCAL SPORT

A big plan for gymnastics in the Mackay region. Michelle Morassi is now the new director of coaching at Mackay Gymnastics and is looking to turn things around. The centre changing its programs to target a higher number of athletes and get participation up.

Sport is set to take off in Mackay with holes already being dug for a new aquatic centre and athletics track. The Mackay Regional Council showing their plans for one of the biggest projects this year. It’s hoped the 72-million-dollar investment will rival Brisbane’s facilities.

ON THE WATERS: Southeasterly 20 to 25 knots, reaching up to 30 knots offshore north of Mackay early in the morning. Seas 1.5 to 2.5 metres. Swell East to northeasterly 1 to 1.5 metres, decreasing to around 1 metre during the morning.

 

Strong Wind Warning has been issued for Wednesday for Mackay Coast by the BoM
