Mackay residents are dusting off their dancing shoes in a bid to break a world record today. The record attempt is getting closer to the magic number of 250 participants, with over 220 residents signing up for what is hoped to be the world’s largest tap dancing class. And what better time to dance our way into the record books than on World Tap Dance Day, May 25.

Community Engagement Committee chair Cr Fran Mann said the current Guinness World Record for the most people participating in a tap dance class in a single venue was 250. “We will beat that easily,” Cr Mann said. “Let’s all come together as one, have some fun, do some tap dancing and set a World Record for Mackay.”

This free community event, which will be hosted in the MECC in Hall B from 3:30pm, is open to everyone – old and young and everyone in between. “And you don’t need tap shoes,” Cr Mann said. “Any shoes that have a hard sole that will make a noise when you stomp will be perfect.”

A world record attempt is no easy feat – it requires video and photo evidence as well as assorted independent witness statements, and stewards to witness for every 50 attendees. Luckily, a number of volunteers throughout the community have already put their hands up for these roles. This record-breaking tap class will be presented by the stars of A Fine Romance: The Magic of Fred Astaire, a Morning Melodies performance tomorrow at the MECC.

Remember, no experience or tap shoes are required. To be a part of Mackay setting a world record, please register yourself, your family or your team/school/group via the MECC at 4961 7777 or register for the event online at themecc.com.au  and arrive at the MECC today from 3pm.

This project is supported by the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland.
