All eyes will be on Airlie Beach, Bowen and the Whitsunday Islands on March 19 as The Queen's Baton Relay makes its way through the state before its final destination of the Gold Coast.

Mayor Andrew Wilcox said he is delighted the Whitsundays would be hosting the GC2018 Queen's Baton Relay.

“It is a great opportunity to recognise the heroes in our community who have been chosen to carry the baton.

It is also an opportunity to showcase and promote our region to people in Australia and the world who have been following the extraordinary journey of the Queen’s Baton.”

Locals are encourage to line the streets and support the batonbearers. The relay will start in Bowen from Sounshell at 2:56pm on March 19.

A Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony will take place and there will be an official speech by Mayor Wilcox and a Guard of Honor by the 1956 Olympic Torch Batonbearers. 

Following its relay in Bowen, The Baton will travel to Airlie Beach and the relay will start from Abell Point Marina at 5:04pm the same day. 

The Airlie Beach relay route will finish at the Lagoon with a community celebration at 5:45pm and will include an official speech by the Mayor, a Guard of Honor by the 1956 Olympic Torch Baton Bearers, entertainment by Mamadojo and a free sausage sizzle.

Whitsunday Islands: Mark Steen, Esther Gaby.
