$476 Fine For Cyclists On Phones

Police will treat bicyclists on their phones the same as drivers from this Saturday.

Officers will be able to issue a $476 fine on the spot for riders caught using their devices regardless of whether they're moving or stationary.

At the moment Victorian riders have to be charged and taken to court in order to face a financial penalty.

The only exception will apply if the phone is mounted properly on the bike, not handheld or being used for navigation, similar to drivers.
