A woman visiting her aunt's grave at Cranbourne Cemetery on Sunday was horrified to discover her plaque and at least eight others had been vandalised or pried off and stolen.
At first Belinda Sandham thought maintenance work had caused the disarray, however a preliminary sweep of the graveyard confirmed something was off
Ms. Sandham, who has several family members buried there, noticed some had been stolen – including her aunt's – while others were badly damaged, bent and covered in scratch marks.
"It took the family quite some time to put the plaque on in the first place, so now the thought that my auntie is being that disrespected that she no longer has a marking on her grave – that you wouldn't even know she was there – it's really upsetting."
A representative for the cemetery told Triple M a comprehensive survey of any damage will be conducted first thing Monday morning.
The City of Casey has also been contacted for comment.
