A watch and act message has been issued for a grassfire that is now under control in Winton, in Victoria's north-east.

The warning has been issued for the communities of Glenrowan West, Lurg and Winton for the grassfire.

An emergency warning had been issued for the grassfire at around 3pm on Sunday, warning that the fire was out of control.

It has since been contained, with a watch and act message in place for the area.

The fire had been moving along Winton - Lurg Road, and has crossed Wattle Creek Road and is moving towards properties.

The suburb is located south-west of Wangaratta, near Benalla, where the temperature has nudged 40 degrees.

Authorities have advised it is too late to leave and for residents to take shelter indoors immediately.
