Melbourne Gripped By Rat Plague

Inner-Melbourne residents and workers have played host to a 'rat plague', after major underground tunnel construction sent a large number of rodents to the surface.

Melbourne Lord Mayor Robert Doyle revealed today that thousands of rats have been unleashed, with pest control contractors brought in to help get the situation under control.

Typically, the rat breeding season is from September to November, and the heavy construction has seen the rodents need to rise above ground.

"In any city... there's kind of a sub-fauna existence - rats, mice, foxes, snakes - all manner of what you would consider to be alien to a busy city... they are there," Mr Doyle said.
