Police are appealing for witnesses after journalist and TV host Andrew Bolt was attacked in the Melbourne suburb of Carlton last week.

Mr Bolt was approached by two males who covered their faces on Lygon Street, near Argyle Place East, about 12.15pm on June 6th.

Police say the men were wearing hoodies and threw what they believe to be glitter and shaving cream at Mr Bolt.

Footage of the incident shows a short scuffle took place before the offenders fled the scene.

Another male who was in the area at the time appeared to be filming or taking photos.

While no one was injured during the incident, police have released an image of a man they believe can assist with their investigation.

Police are urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
