Sam Newman Has Pulled Out Of The Lord Mayor Race Because He’s Going To The US Masters

Footy Show co-host Sam Newman has shelved plans to run for the lord mayorship of Melbourne because he will be at the US Masters in Augusta when nominations open and close, according to The Age.

Nominations open April 5 and shut at noon on April 10, during which time Newman will be covering the US Masters for Channel 9.

"My employer has required me to go to Augusta to cover the event for the network, and I'm elated about that," Newman said, describing going to the famous course as "a lifelong dream".

He insisted that his candidacy was not a stunt.

"I'm sure many will just see this as a fairly shallow attempt at [publicity] or a stunt, but it really never was," he said.

He said that the Victorian Electoral Commission has told him there was no other way to nominate for the byelection.
