We're still three sleeps from winter officially starting, but it's fallen early less than 100km's from the city.

Snow has come down on Mount Donna Buang (near Warburton), overnight with temps getting down to -4.7 degrees in the mountain ranges.

"We had a strong cold front move across the state yesterday, and that dragged quite a lot of cold air up from the southern ocean, so as a result the conditions were cold enough to give us decent snow falls about the alps," the Bureau of Meteorology's Chris Godfred said.

"We did hear reports of some pretty healthy totals about the major resorts... and the snow even got low enough to give a dusting on Mount Donna Buang yesterday as well."

Here's some more pics of the snow:

The good or bad news, depending on how you look at it, is more cold weather is on the way.

"We have another cold front which is going to cross pretty early tomorrow (Tuesday) morning," Mr Godfred said.

"That wind will certainly feel pretty icy if you're out and about."

We're looking at a top of 14 in Melbourne Tuesday, with BOM saying more snow will likely fall in the alps tomorrow afternoon.
