Drivers across Australia have been put on notice as part of a 24 hour road blitz.
Patrolling officers will pull out all the stops to curb bad behaviour as part of Operation Safe Speeds which runs until midnight tonight.
Victoria Police Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Doug Fryer says five kilometres could be the difference between life or death.
"The faster the speed, the greater the impact, it's simple," said the Assistant Commissioner.
"There's no one that's getting up this morning that doesn't expect to be home because of a fatal crash but the stark reality is that the statistics would say somewhere across Australia someone will die today on our roads."
Operation Safe Speeds runs until 11:59pm on Thursday November 16.
