A man and a woman have been shot by police in a Melbourne nightclub overnight after the man reportedly pulled a gun on officers.
The incident occurred around 3am in Melbourne's Inflation nightclub on King St, during a Saints and Sinners Ball, described as a "no holds barred extravaganza of adult fun" on its website.
Police responded to a report a man was armed with a firearm, and fired at the man after he reportedly pulled out the weapon on officers.
It has been reported the gun was fake, and part of a costume.
He sustained a wound to the torso and is in a critical condition in the Royal Melbourne Hospital, while another woman was shot in the leg and was taken to The Alfred in a stable condition.
Superintendent Lisa Hardeman explained the incident to reporters on Saturday morning.
"As a response police then fired a number of shots and a male and female were injured," she said.
She could not confirm whether the gun was real or fake.
"When a firearm is pointed at you in these circumstances, police are not sure at that stage whether it is real or an imitation," she said.
"That will be part of the investigation."
Bar staff said the man was dressed as the Joker, from Batman.
“The male with a toy gun was dressed as a Joker,” they told the Herald Sun.
“Two innocent people were shot, he had a toy gun which he declared to security.”
