Big Hill Trail fire update:

Containment held despite more smoke

The Rural Fire Service today looking to allay fears surrounding the Big Hill Trail fire, after smoke descended on town early in the morning.

The RFS' Ben Simmons says the last few pockets of bush inside existing containment lines are being burnt out, generating a bit of smoke.

Back-burning also occurred yesterday afternoon, the total area burnt out now almost 10 thousand hectares.

"As we saw the cooler temperatures overnight that's trapped some of the smoke and some has blown down the coast and inland," Mr Simmons said.

It's likely the smoke signals will continue over the next few days, before the fire is finally put out.

No guarantee that'll happen though, the RFS concerned containment lines could be tested in coming days.

Unstable weather patterns and increased temperatures increase the risk of the fire coming back to life.
