Port Macquarie-Hastings rangers have been busy over the summer period, handing out 75 on the spot litter fines since the start of the year.

That compares to 2017 which saw just 130 infringements issued all year.

Group Manager Maria Doherty said it was disappointing that the ‘hey tosser’ message seemed to be struggling to get through.

“Whilst most people are doing the right thing, there are still members of our community that think it’s ok to pollute our parks and public spaces with litter.

“Cigarette butts are a major problem because they are easily carried by stormwater runoff through our drainage systems and eventually into our rivers and ocean where they harm the environment,” said Ms Doherty.

Fines for littering begin at 80 dollars and can increase to 250 dollars depending on what litter is tossed and where.

Infringements can be issued on the spot, with council Rangers now at a number of Port Macquarie hotspots including Town Beach, Town Green, Horton Street, Kooloonbung Creek car park and foreshore area, and at Westport Park.
