Wildlife bodies have put the call out for Mid North Coast residents to keep an eye out for a juvenile dugong, after an animal believed to be its mother was discovered dead.

National Parks and Wildlife have been on the scene at Stuarts Point this afternoon with support crews from Coffs Harbour's Dolphin Marine Magic, ORRCA and Sydney Sea Life Aquarium as an autopsy will be performed on the deceased mammal.

Crews have grave fears for the surviving animal, and are seeking to figure out the health of the juvenile.

It comes as as ORRCA reps say the creature's skin has already shown signs of whitening due to cooler water temperatures.

The mammals are usually found further north.

If you have any info or further sightings you can call the ORCCA Emergency Hotline on 9415 33 33.
