The upgraded Port Macquarie Indoor stadium was officially opened this morning, and local sports groups are now looking forward to being able to better develop talent in the region.

There are now an extra three multi-purpose courts for indoor sports, offices, a kiosk and 169 car parking spaces.

The $7.2 million upgrades were jointly funded by Port Macquarie-Hastings Council and the Federal government. Local clubs have been using the facilities since Monday.

Beyond hosting local basketball, netball, volleyball, futsal and pro-wrestling events, Cowper MP Luke Hartsuyker says the expanded complex can play a role in Port Macquarie's growing reputation as an "Event tourism" destination.

"Event tourism is very much the way of the future for regional cities such as Port, and having quality facilities that are national class is part of that."

Governance officer for Port Macquarie Basketball Greg Maraun says the new facilities will help the organisation support developing athletes along their pathway to professional sport.

"Having current up to date facilities will encourage a lot of young athletes of Basketball - and any sport for that matter - to come along," Mr Maraun said.

"They'll be able to learn from that junior level all the way through to senior and follow their own dreams."
