Lifeguards are warning mid north coast beachgoers to read safety signs for information about the beaches, after a 54 year old man drowned in the ocean just north of Repton, in the Bellinger Valley, yesterday afternoon.

Around 5pm, the man and two boys - aged 11 and 14 - were swimming at Tuckers Rock Beach, when the boys were seen to struggle in the water.

A short time later the boys returned to shore safely, however, the man was pulled from the water unresponsive.

Despite the efforts of a bystander, who performed CPR, and two North Coast Duty Officers, he couldn't be revived.

Surf Life Saving NSW media says the man had been in the water for at least 25 minutes, but the circumstances of how he got into difficulty were not immediately clear.

A report is being prepared for the Coroner.
