Former mayoral candidate Peta Pinson will take a tilt at the upcoming by-election for Port Macquarie-Hastings Council's top job.

Her campaign team has released a statement this morning indicating she'll be on the ballot paper July 29, following Peter Besseling's shock resignation to take up a job with Birdon Marine.

Ms Pinson was unsuccessful during last September’s local government elections, but secured 29.29% of the vote by alleging council was set to bring in a 52.4% rate increase.

In contrast, a special rate variation increase of just 5.39% was approved by the Independent Planning and Regulatory Tribunal earlier this month for the LGA.

Ms Pinson's decision to run also comes just weeks after the council lost its appeal to avoid a lawsuit payout of nearly $250,000 to Ms Pinson's partner's company, Mid Coast Road Services.
