UPDATE: A Watch and Act situation now in place for the Big Hill Trail fire in Crescent Head.

Residents in the vicinity of Maria River Road, particularly on the western side of Maria River Road, are advised to monitor the situation and conditions due to an increase in fire activity.

Maria River Road is closed between Crescent Head Road and Shoreline Drive.

Those travelling on the Pacific Highway also advised to exercise caution, heavy smoke impacting visibility.

There is no immediate threat to homes, however residents are advised to follow their bush fire survival plan and take direction from firefighters in the area.

Due to fire activity and backburning operations, there will be a significant amount of smoke visible in the area and over Port Macquarie today.

The Big Hill bush fire at Crescent Head is at the Advice level and in the process of being controlled, after flaring up again yesterday.

The blaze just north of Port Macquarie sent plumes of smoke over town and Wauchope yesterday, over 2000 hectares of land scorched.

The Coffs McLeahy Rurual Fire Service has been round to houses most threatened, but say at this stage evacuation of homes shouldn't be required.

Assisting the operation is a large air tanker, the fire last reported to be burning just southeast of Limeburners creek.

While the imminent threat is over, warmer weather today will mean fire crews will need to keep on top of the situation.
