A FUGITIVE accused of pointing a shotgun at police north of Macksville before taking them on a high speed chase appeared in Lismore Local Court via videolink yesterday.

David Bell was wanted in Queensland and South Australia when he allegedly brandished the firearm on December 11th, escaping the pursuit after ramming his van into a gate near Urunga and running into bushland.

Bell was arrested in the Richmond River, after driving the van into the water at South Ballina and attempting to swim away with an accomplice.

Police are also alleging Bell had half a million dollars worth of stolen cigarettes in his possession on December 30th.

He's been refused bail to appear before Coffs Harbour Local Court on March 14th.

YESTERDAY: A man who escaped from Police before being captured a number of weeks later will appear in Lismore Local Court today via video link.

Police will allege that the 37 year old man left an RBT site on the Pacific Highway at Macksville on 11 December 2016.

According to Police, he allegedly then pointed a firearm at pursuing officers. Despite extensive searches, the man escaped after running into bushland at Valla about 35km south of Coffs Harbour.

The wanted fugitive and another man were later captured after driving a van into a river at South Ballina following an early morning pursuit.

He is facing a number of charges including attempt to discharge firearm with intent to resist arrest and use offensive weapon to prevent lawful apprehension.
