Bellingen Labour's Andrew Woodward has confirmed he's nominated for pre-selection, for the Federal Division of Cowper.

He's the first from Labor to publicly confirm he's interested in running, come Federal election time next year.

Despite nominations closing last Friday, Mr Woodward has not revealed if any other potential candidates have put their hat in the ring for Labor.

He'll be endorsed by the party in April if there are no others looking for pre-selection, but if there are a vote will be held, before the winner is endorsed in May.

Mr Woodward previously ran against the Liberals Tony Abbott for the seat of Warringah, in 2016.

Cowper is currently occupied by Nationals stalwart Luke Hartsuyker, who has held the seat since 2001, and was re-elected in 2004, 2007, 2010 and 2016.

The region stretches from as far south as Port Macquarie, covering part of the Hastings region, and extends to the North up as far as Coffs Harbour.
