Japanese scientists claim they've managed to mass produce 'hair follicle germs' - the cells that fuel follicle development - for the first time, using the chemical dimethylpolysiloxane which is also found in McDonald's famous french fries.

The fast food restaurant uses the product to prevent the cooking oil from foaming.

5,000 HFGs were created simultaneously and led to new hair growth when transplanted into mice. Researchers are confident the same procedure could work on humans.

Pattern baldness affects around a third of Aussie men, while 36 per cent of women will deal with some form of hair loss after the age of 30.
