Australians who want a say in the upcoming postal plebiscite on same sex marriage have two weeks to register their interest, and make sure their details are correct on the electoral roll.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics is set to make the announcement today, confirming Thursday August 24 as the cut off date for registrations.

The ballot papers themselves will be posted to any enrolled Australians in September, with voters told to get the papers back at a yet-to-be-revealed date in November.

The plans for the postal vote are pushing ahead, despite a potential road block..

A High Court challenge by marriage equality advocates could delay things further.

Advocates Shelley Argent and Felicity Marlowe have started the challenge, after being told there are constitutional problems with the ABS running the process and the government paying the $122 million for it without getting parliament's approval.
