Sixteen police officers called to the Flinders Street incident yesterday in Melbourne's CBD have been revealed as being on their first day on the job.

Victoria Police Association's Wayne Gatt says a total of around 70 officers were deployed to the scene, shortly after a white SUV ploughed through crowds of Christmas shoppers as they crossed the busy street.

"Just imagine that...your first day in Victoria Police out in the street after your training..", says Gatt.

"To be confronted with that sort of carnage, it's a credit to their training and it's a credit to their colleagues and their professionalism. They worked and performed so well", he says.

"We are very proud of them."

As for the off duty officer who jumped into action within 15 seconds of the incident, dragging the driver from the vehicle and wrestling him to the ground before uniformed officers arrived on scene...

"This officer did what we would expect all members of ours to do.. He's clearly put service above self"

"It's brave, it's courageous... but that's truly a feature of all of our members", says Gatt.
