Airport workers will protest split shifts and pay cuts during strikes across the country today.

Footage released in March showed staff sleeping at airports during the long shifts, with the Transport Workers Union seeking a Federal Court judgement to make split shifts unlawful for airport, aged care, nurses and shop workers.

Group handling service provider Aerocare is seeking approval to legalise the shifts for workers across 39 industries, including aviation.

However National Secretary Tony Sheldon claims it would create third-world conditions and increases risk of injury.

"Aerocare is making an application to mean that you can work up to 17 hours a day on split shifts with as little as six hours pay."

WHERE:

  • Brisbane Airport – 10am – domestic terminal carpark walkway
  • Adelaide Airport – 12pm – outside Aerocare offices
  • Sydney Airport – 12.30pm domestic terminal
  • Melbourne Airport – 1pm – international departures
  • Perth Airport – 2pm T2 international airport
