Police are investigating a shocking chain of events on the southside this morning. 

It's still early days in the investigation, but it's believed a man broke into a place on Collina Crescent at Forest Lake at around 3.30am, threatening the 37 year old woman inside with a knife. 

The woman's teenage son stepped in to help.. Police telling us both the woman and her son have been taken to hospital for treatment. 

The woman is listed as critical, suffering numerous stab wounds to her upper body, while the 18 year old has wounds to his arms and hands. 

The alleged attacker took off from the scene, and was found dead just 10 minutes later after his car collided with a parked semi-trailer on Formation Street, Wacol.

The 46 year old was pronounced dead at the scene.

Inspector Steve Flori has told Nine the man was known to the woman and her son. 

"He was in a relationship with the woman concerned. There was the 18 year old and three smaller children at the house at the time, they're being well cared for at the moment."
