Today is World Sleep Day, and with this in mind, Triple M has spoken to one of Australia's top sleep experts to give you some tips for getting the perfect night of shut-eye.

While sleep is often the main thing we sacrifice - whether it's for work or a Netflix binge, it turns out that we're drastically underestimating the importance of a good night's sleep.

"Sleep is just as important as physical fitness and diet/nutrition - it's one of the three pillars of health," Dr Moira Junge from the Sleep Health Foundation said.

"The average adult needs seven to nine hours sleep, but that is just the average. It's absolutely essential to be in tune with your own body's rhythms.

"Some of us are night owls and some are early birds. Be aware of where you fit in that.

"Just in the same way that getting fit takes a bit of planning, so does getting a good night's sleep."

As anyone with a job can attest, while this all sounds good, it's a bit more difficult in practice.

However, Dr Junge has some basic tips to get you back on track.

"It's really important to have a routine around sleep. Try to get to bed around the same time every night and get out of bed at the same time every morning.

"This goes a long way to creating good sleep health.

"It's actually really important to catch up on sleep whenever you can. It's about trying not to oversleep too much so then you upset the routine for the working week. So catching up with an extra hour or two of sleep will be fine, but not sleeping the whole day away.

"A 20-minute nap might also be the key during the day when possible."
