We’ve all seen some pretty random stuff across the internet but the latest viral trend of teenagers filming themselves eating laundry pods probably tops the list for stupidity.

The potentially life-threatening challenge has featured in YouTube videos showing teens pretending to cook Tide-branded laundry pods on a stove top, before serving them up in a bowl and eating them, USA Today reports.

In Australia, OMO and Cold Power stock equivalent-branded pods.

A 2016 study from Pediatrics Monday noted a rise in reports of children who’d accessed the pods, which are said to be more harmful than powder.

“During the two years of this study we saw an increase in the number of exposures due to detergent, but especially among exposures to laundry detergent packets,” study coauthor Dr. Gary Smith, Director of the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children’s Hospital told Today.

“In fact, a child is reported to a poison control center about every 45 minutes in this country.”

On their website, Tide recommends consumers to drink a glass of water or milk if they consume one of the laundry pods while contacting emergency services immediately.

In Australia, the Poisons Information Centre can be reached 24 hours a day on 13 11 26.
