The Australian Bureau of Statistics has warned that people who attempt to transfer their postal votes on the same-sex marriage survey could face jail time.

This comes after a Sydney person posted on eBay that they were willing to 'sell' their vote for $1500.

What is this plebiscite worth to you. [sic] The reason I'm selling my vote is because either way I don't care but thought there are people who do. Part of this auction proceeds will go to help kids battling cancer.

The item is also listed as 'New: A brand-new, unused, unopened, undamaged item'.

The ABS has said that an attempt to buy or sell a vote "would likely (be) an offence against the Census and Statistics Act 1905 or the Commonwealth Criminal Code", according to news.com.au.

This could see a $2100 penalty, and possibly even a 12 year jail sentence.

Facebook and eBay have reportedly agreed with the ABS' terms and will block and remove any ads selling votes.
