In breaking news, accused Australian drug smuggler Joshua James Baker has been released from Kerobokan jail.

According to Nine News, he will be sent to a mental health facility in Bali.

It is unknown how long he will spend there.

Baker was due to appear before the Denpasar District Court this afternoon.

It is understood that his lawyers organised for him to be released on the grounds of mental illness.

Baker flew from Cambodia to Bali in October, allegedly carrying 28 grams of marijuana-tobacco mix and 37 Diazepam pills.

He has maintained that he did not know that the marijuana was present in the tobacco he bought in Cambodia.

It is unclear when his trial will resume.
