The legal team for accused drug smuggler Cassie Sainsbury has asked the Aussie government to help cover part of her legal costs as she fights numerous charges in Colombia.

It's been nearly a month since the 22-year-old South Australian was detained at Bogota's El Dorado International Airport after 5.8 kilograms of cocaine was allegedly found in her suitcase, hidden inside 18 headphone boxes.

Sainsbury's lawyer in Bogota, Orlando Herran, told News Corp she applied for financial assistance last week.

Canberra does offer support to Aussies in trouble overseas, for those facing more than 20 years or the death penalty they may be helped through the 'Serious Overseas Criminal Matters Scheme'.

In the past, the fund has assisted executed Bali Nine members Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran and Schapelle Corby.

Sainsbury is facing a maximum of 25 years in prison, if she pleads guilty she could get as little as 4 years and that sentenced could be reduced further if she agrees to work behind bars.
