Australians are still being left behind when it comes to broadband internet speed –with performance continuing to rate well below the global average.

The Ookla Speed Test Global Index ranked Australia as 55th in the world for fixed broadband in December with an average download speed of 25.88 Mbps. The list was based on data from 129 countries.

The average download speed globally is 40.71 Mbps – while Singapore topped the list with an impressive 161.21 Mbps.

Even our mates in New Zealand boast internet speeds more than twice as fast, with a download speed of 64.31 Mbps.

And  if you’ve ever thought your mobile internet was faster than your home internet, you’d be right.

Australia came seventh in the world for mobile internet speeds, boasting a healthy download speed of 48.97 Mbps.
