A murder investigation is happening over in Bali, after the body of an Australian man was found inside a rental home.

The 63 year old from Perth, named as Stephen Richardson, had moved to Indonesia only 3 months ago and had been renting the place at Sanur.

Friends had seen the retiree drinking at a local bar on Saturday but became worried when his door went unanswered for several days.

Local police say a friend jumped the fence to access the villa on Monday afternoon, and discovered the man's naked and bloodied body on the bed.

In a statement, Police said the man had suffered several wounds to his arm, forehead and cheeks.

The house was locked and there was broken glass from a cabinet inside the villa.

"The first possibility is that the foreigner died due to an assault as there are wounds on his body."

"The victim also had a habit of drinking alcohol ... so there is a possibility that the victim died due to be drunk and falling and hitting glass."

A spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has confirmed consular assistance is being provided "in line with the Consular Services Charter, to the family of an Australian man who died in Indonesia. For privacy reasons, we will not provide further comment.”
