Bali police investigating the death of an Australian woman at a luxury seaside villa believe she may have consumed a large amount of alcohol beforehand.

The 38-year-old Queenslander, named by authorities as Summa Jean Simmonds, and two friends were drinking at Peppers resort in the popular tourist town of Seminyak on Sunday.

Police claim she consumed a "whole bottle of vodka" before having six more shots later in the evening.

That night, Ms Simmonds apparently went to her villa to get money so she and her friends - believed to be 20 and 46 - could go out.

She then began vomiting, Badung Police Precinct Chief, Budi Setiawan said.

"The victim fainted, was unconscious, and her pulse became weak. The victim's face and lips turned blue," he said on Monday.

Her friends gave the Cairns mother CPR and called the hotel's reception for a doctor.

A doctor arrived just after midnight and she was pronounced dead minutes later, Superintendent Budi said.

He confirmed police believe she may have died from alcohol poisoning.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is providing consular assistance to the woman's family.
