Barnaby Joyce is pretty keen for the ban on federal MPs hiring relatives to end.

The former deputy prime minister and Nationals leader - who now has a child with ex staffer Vikki Campion - said it was a "mistake" for Tony Abbott to usher in the rule back in 2013.

"(Your loved one is) probably one of the best persons working for you because she more than anyone understands your diary, understands kids' birthdays, anniversaries," he told the Courier Mail.

"Understands all the things you've got to be a part of if you want to stay married.

“The only way you can give true support to a relationship is allow people to be together as much as they possibly can."

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has already told Seven he's got "no plans" to overturn the ban.

He said: "That arrangement has been in place for five years."
