Batten Down The Hatches: Yet Another Cruise Ship Gastro Outbreak

Approximately 200 passengers on board a cruise ship have been struck down with gastro.

The Sea Princess ship docked in Brisbane after a two-week cruise which departed initially from New Zealand.

While attempts were made to contain the outbreak, roughly 7 per cent of the attending passengers were hit with gastro.

Extensive cleaning is underway, which is expected to cause delays for the trip planned to depart today.

“Proactive steps taken on board during the cruise reduced the number of new cases being reported and guests were also thanked for adhering to sound health guidelines including regular hand washing and use of hand sanitiser dispensers,” a Princess Cruises spokesperson said.

Queensland Health has confirmed that norovirus was the cause of the gastro outbreak, with the bug spread from contaminated food or drink, touching contaminated surfaces, physical contact with someone who is infected, or through airborne particles.

Symptoms typically include nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting and stomach cramps.
