If you're spending your weekends in front of the idiot box binge watching House Of Cards there's a good chance you're probably not going to remember a whole lot.

That's because researchers at the University Of Melbourne have found that watching over three hours of television in one hit will actually start to diminish long term memory.

"If you think about it, it's hard to not watch three episodes of some shows, especially if they're really good," Dr Jared Cooney Horvath told ABC Radio Melbourne.

"You have maybe 72 hours and then your memory for everything starts to tank."

Dr Jared said choosing to instead watch shows once a night or once a week had much better outcomes for those tuning in - and remembering your favourite moments.

"Your memory for everything increases, it actually gets better," he said.

"So when you come back the next day to watch something, it's actually fresher in your mind than when you sit down and try to do it all at once."
