The body of a boy missing since going body-boarding with friends down a flooded park in Unanderra, south of Wollongong yesterday afternoon has been found.

11-year-old Ryan Teasdale was sliding down the wet and muddy grassy slope when disappeared from Riley Park at about 4.30pm with police informed two hours after his family conducted their own search.

Lake Illawarra Local Area Commander Zoran Dzevlan becoming emotional making the announcement this morning.

"At approximately 11.15am ... after an extensive search by police, SES, emergency services and volunteers, it's with great sadness that I tell you that we have located the body of a young boy in a creek bed at the end of a storm water drain in Unanderra."

His body was found 500 metres away from where he went missing and his blue boogie board has not been located.

"The family of the boy has been informed and the family ask that their privacy be respected and we'll continue with our investigations at this stage...You can imagine how the family are [sic]."

His body is yet to be formally identified while a report will be prepared for the coroner.

Police also thanking the searchers, volunteers, community and media for their assistance.
